This particular piece of property backs onto a ravine and green belt area that separates the neighbourhood from a local golf course. The edge of the property drops steeply to the ravine basin.
This slope presented a challenge for onsite movement due to the overall large scope of the project within the confines that this slope created. The existing landscape was comprised of mainly poorly performing turf and an awkwardly designed and constructed deck.
A few initial ideas were drawn up based on the client’s objectives. The creative process revolved around creating a very livable space that maintained seamless integration with the proposed water feature, as well as the natural ravine that the property backed onto.
The finalized scale/concept plantings plans were designed with the incorporation of a large water feature as well as curved cedar deck that is cantilevered out over the water feature allowing clean site lines to the surrounding focal points as well as a very strong connection to the landscape. A very unique and challenging aspect of the design was the integration of a hot tub as part of the the water feature.
Once the final plans were approved construction began. The most challenging aspect of the construction phase was to situate the hot tub properly, to allow the clients to have a near eye level view of the surrounding water.
This new landscape was designed to integrate seamlessly into the natural surrounding that the property is situated on. Outdoor living was a high priority, so a large curved cedar deck was constructed to accommodate this. The deck is cantilevered out over the massive water feature, providing clean site-lines to the surrounding focal points. Once you step off the deck onto the basalt stairs you are led down a natural stone path which provides access to a sunken hot-tub which is situated within the large water feature. As the owners relax in the hot-tub they are able to view the surrounding water feature from a near eye level view. The deep sounds of a waterfall emanate from a series of large cascades which are directed towards the main vantage points of the hot-tub and cantilevered deck. The clients now feel immersed in the naturalized surrounding with the dense plantings of ornamental trees, shrubs, ferns, and grasses, while still maintaining select site lines to the nearby ravine.
