The biggest challenge for this Vancouver landscape design project was to successfully fit all of the client’s wish list into a small backyard. The property lacked functional outdoor living space and was your typical grass expanse.
The top items on the wish list included a covered upper service patio for barbequing, a semi floating entertaining patio, raised basalt planters, a dry stream bed, a stone path, a Koi pond, waterfalls, two stream systems, and dense ornamental plantings for privacy and year round colour and interest.
Initial concepts were generated through rough sketches of the property, integrating the functionality requested by the client and was based on the top three design objectives.
These concepts were reviewed with the client prior to proceeding with the formal drawings.
A formal scale landscape concept/planting plan was generated specifying the location of all features as per the wish list and the client’s top three design objectives. The overall design of the patio space was very curvilinear in shape allowing additional features and focal points to flow along its perimeter.
Construction began after approval of the finalized plans. Hardscape features were installed followed by softscape and lighting components.
The client is now enjoying what was once just a dream for his idealized outdoor living space, now as a reality. The patio was suspended over the large pond, thus allowing the entertaining area to expand out into the landscape. The overall design of the patio space was very curvilinear in shape allowing additional features and focal points to flow along its perimeter. This feature allows the client and his guests to be immersed in the lush surroundings, and provides unrestricted viewing of the multiple focal points such as waterfalls and streams that are directed toward the viewing area, as well as the clients prized Koi collection!
The project was awarded the 2006 British Columbia Landscape and Nursery Association (BCLNA) Award of Excellence and was featured in the Winter 2007 Home Makeover Magazine.
