The original landscape was a typical builder special with a host of major issues throughout; including extremely poor grading and drainage, dead hedging and plant material, zero curb appeal, and no outdoor living space. We are called in to fix builder landscapes quiet regularly, and clients say had they known that they could have applied the builder budget allowance to a professionally installed landscape they would have done so, as it was basically money down the drain, literally.
Solution:
Pacifica Landscape Works was enlisted to tackle all of the issues with this builder-installed landscape in West Vancouver, as well as create an amazing warm and inviting outdoor living space in west coast modern landscape design that also had to be fully wheel chair accessible. Curb appeal was also high on the client’s wish list. The design process focused on creating that curb appeal in the front yard with symmetry and clean bold lines, while outdoor living was the top priority in the backyard. Design objectives included; a large west coast contemporary outdoor living space constructed using hardwood decking with unique rectilinear perimeter lines defining planting pockets and flanked by large specimen boulders actually cut into the deck surface, cozy fire feature, overhead pergola, water feature for sound and dramatic site lines, and heated pathways for wheel chair accessibility, all executed in a strong warm west coast contemporary design them!
Implementation:
Construction commenced in the fall of 2014 and was completed in the fall as well with work being conducted in the front and back simultaneously. Site grading and drainage issues were tackled first, with a substantial amount of new drainage lines being installed as well as French drain systems. Once the grading and drainage was completed the specimen boulder placement was completed followed by construction of the water feature. The next components were decking, pathways, soil, lighting irrigation, and then the icing on the cake with installation of all of the ornamental plant material!
Completion:
The completed project has surpassed our expectations, as well as that of the client, with all of her expectations and objectives being either met or exceeded! Strong curb appeal was achieved in the front with strong symmetrical lines, and a warm inviting outdoor living space created in the backyard for intimate gatherings or just pure rest and relaxation. The backyard ambience now draws the clients into the beautiful surroundings with total privacy and tranquility. They are greeted with the sounds of the cascading water feature, the warmth of the cozy fire feature, and the comfort of the contemporary furnishings. Dramatic lighting effects allow the spaces to come to life at night and extend their usage well into the evenings.
