Once again another builder special as we like to refer to it. The clients has spent considerable amounts of money and time for the builder of their home to install this White Rock landscape and had they known they weren’t obligated to complete this phase of the project with the builder they would have applied their landscape budget to hiring a landscape professional. They basically had to do their landscape twice and literally poured money down the drain, not to mention the time wasted. The project scope consisted of a complete landscape reno of the existing landscape as there had been no thought put into the basic function and flow, as well as host of other considerable issues. They had no usable outdoor living space, no planning for the softscaping, as well as grading and drainage issues.
The clients wanted to hire a local White Rock landscape designer to redesign the entire property on this Cliffside location within itself provided challenges. Pacifica Landscape Works was up to the challenge and began with discussing the client’s wish list which placed emphasis on creating curb appeal in front and outdoor living in the back. Designing White Rock landscapes can often be quite challenging with the steep cliff locations that you have to work with. The client’s wish list included enlarging the backyard out to the cliff edge to allow it to be large enough to function as an outdoor living space. Additionally we designed distinct dining and BBQ areas as well as a raised turf viewing area to function as a secondary living space to capitalize on the amazing views. Other wish list items included raised beds constructed out of architectural concrete, contemporary water feature, bluestone patios, pergola, specimen boulders, lighting, ornamental plantings, and irrigation.
This White Rock landscape design was completed in the summer of 2014 and, when looking at the before photos, it’s hard to believe it is the same backyard! The space was considerably enlarged allowing for the attractive rectilinear architectural concrete planter walls to define the space, provide a sense of enclosure, as well as privacy and safety from the steep cliff. Access to the beautiful bluestone patios has been improved with a relocated and improved stair case from the upper deck. The spaces now provide functional and distinct dining and outdoor living areas, with the client being drawn into the landscape. They feel immersed in the lush plantings which provide privacy, tranquility, and year round interest. There is also that feeling of serenity that only a well planned landscape can provide which stimulates all of your senses. At night the landscape takes on a whole new life of its own with the dramatic landscape lighting and extends the usage of the spaces as well. Also in the front the beautiful home now has that much needed curb appeal that it lacked!
