This particular White Rock landscape had limited private outdoor living options, with a side yard that had potential but was underutilized and dominated by a shed and dog run. The area also had a lot of overgrown shrubs crowding the space, poorly performing turf, and zero visual appeal. The client’s objectives were to create a private sanctuary that had a very distinctive outdoor lounge ambience. Other design objectives included creating privacy, making the space feel larger, incorporating a bar, hot tub, and fire side seating areas.
The design objectives for this White Rock Landscape Design project were carefully examined and presented in a scale landscape design drawing. The design focused on enlarging the feel of the space by creating an elongated hardwood patio deck that would draw your eye from one end of the space to the other. Other features were used to create the illusion of a larger space, such as mirrors, and the backdrop wall which provides privacy as well as screens the utility shed. Additionally a trellis structure runs the length of the deck and provides additional privacy and definition to the space. The spa has been designed as a sunken feature which also creates more space by minimizing the number of steps required to access the spa, as well as creating a custom look and improving the privacy. Other features such as the bar and seating area with fire feature were laid out to maximize the use of the space and create that lounge style ambience.
The side yard patio space now reflects the client’s objectives of creating an ambience of a lounge style outdoor living space with a dramatic before and after transformation. Space was created with multiple design techniques, and improvements as well as a few tricks such as mirrors etc. Privacy was created with the design of an overhead trellis, hardwood backdrop wall, plantings, and creating a sunken spa. These elements come together to provide the clients with that sanctuary they had desired. During the evening the space takes on a whole new life with warm LED lighting features accenting architectural features, and providing ambience as gatherings are enjoyed into the evenings. Fine detailing is what sets a great project apart and this space has many unique features such as surface mount LED’s throughout the deck surface, backlit mirror, cut out details in the backdrop wall for candles, and central cut out perfect for a bottle of wine, 2 glasses, and easily reached from the sunken spa! One would have never imagined that this White Rock landscape was once a dog run! It is now a White Rock Side Yard Sanctuary!
