One of our favourite urban landscape projects.
Originally the street-scape of this narrow lot was overgrown, dysfunctional, and did nothing to complement the contemporary residence. The landscape was sloped towards the house and the plant material was getting out of hand. The solution was to create curb appeal by raising the landscape to level off the yard as well as create a contemporary streetscape display with a series of unique backdrop walls and silhouetting screens for illumination in the evenings. These walls also served to reduce the large overpowering expanse of stucco walls of the residence. The landscape now provides a very dynamic display through the days and into the evenings with the movement of wispy ornamental grasses by day, and the dramatic lighting effect by night. Lights are directed towards the architectural foliage and against the backdrop walls creating very unique silhouettes at night. Also a reverse effect was created by shining landscape lights through bamboo stocks and against translucent screens creating another very dramatic and dynamic silhouette lighting effect.
This project was the recipient of a 2009 BCLNA Landscape Award of Excellence for the Unique Feature Category!
